Ages ago, as the temperatures dropped and the days got shorter, communities gathered together to harvest their crops and share their bounty with one another. Working together and sharing what they had assured that everyone would have what they needed to survive until the spring thaw.

Life is not so rustic as it once was, but we still honor that responsibility to care for our neighbors and assure that they have enough to make it through the long winter ahead.

BTF is a small but mighty organization able to make a tremendous impact in the community, but we would never be able to do it alone. It is our connections that make us mighty–the people and organizations who we partner with, and that invest in us, that give us the ability to do so much for so many pet families. Our partnerships with YOU-people, organizations, and businesses allow us to stretch every donated dollar and reach around every corner of the neighborhoods we serve. Even though there are clearer skies, the gray clouds loom over the City of Angels, and here at bTF we are doing our best to provide a rainbow, or at least a ray of hope for pet parents across the community. The skyrocketing costs of vet care, food, and housing is making it harder than ever for pet families to stay together. Animal shelters are overcrowded with pet surrenders and pets found on the streets where people have abandoned them. Rescues are full and adoption rates are not keeping up.

Our heartfelt wish this year is for everyone, including pets, to be home for the holidays. Home isn’t a place or a dwelling; home is the feeling of belonging when you’re with the ones you love. Many of the people we serve experience housing insecurity, but they are never without Home as long as they have their beloved pet beside them. With Thanksgiving and the holiday season right around the corner, we here at bTF want to share our heartfelt gratitude for all you do and give as our supporters. We would not be here if you were not here. It’s been a tough year everywhere, including in our community, and you have shown up again and again to keep pets out of the already-crowded shelter system and stay with the people who love them. A can of cat food, access to vet care, a redemption fee can all be accounted for in terms of monetary value, but the relief you provide to pet parents with your donations is priceless. We thank you for all you’ve given and all you do, this year and every year. The temperature’s rising and so is our community’s needs! Just because the sun shines, doesn’t mean there aren’t dark times for some pet parents. The requests for assistance are pouring in from all sides. The shelter hours have increased so we’re meeting more people in person while still responding to the calls, emails, and texts for pet food, support for veterinary care, and other resources to help pets stay with the people they love. Take a look at what’s in store this summer, what we plan for cooler weather, and get to know our Shelter Intervention Coordinators who field all those requests, providing pet parents with the options and resources they need to keep their families together.

2021 is the year we emerged from isolation, ready to come together after our long year apart. From gatherings with friends and families to community partnerships, to the uniting of Bark Avenue Foundation and Home Dog LA into betterTogether Forever, this has been an exceptional year of togetherness.

Fall is officially upon us, but much like the weather in Southern California, we’re not cooling down! Through all your support, hundreds of pets and their people have been helped just this month.
